WSS SP1 64-bit on Windows 2008 & the Adobe PDF iFilter

· Download the PDF icon (select ‘small 17 x 17’) from http://www.adobe.com/misc/linking.html

· Name the 17×17 icon pdfsmall.gif

· Save the icon in c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\IMAGES

· Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML.

· Edit C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\XML DOCICON.XML file in Notepad.

· In the <ByExtension> Tag add an entry for the PDF icon ‘Mapping Key=”pdf” to Value=”pdfsmall.gif”. Just copy and paste one of the others. e.g.

· Stop the IIS and SharePoint Services.

· Download and install the Adobe 64-bit PDF iFilter version 9.

· At a command prompt type: regsvr32.exe “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\bin\PDFFilter.dll”

· Restart IIS SharePoint Search Service.

· In the registry add this value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\Search\Applications\<GUID>\Gather\Search\Extensions\ExtensionList\38 and set it to pdf.

· If 38 is taken use the next available number.

· Navigate to the subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\Search\Applications\GUID\Gather\Search\Extensions\ExtensionList

· Create a new string value for 38, modify it and in the value data box type pdf.

· Ensure this registry subkey (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\Search\Setup\ContentIndexCommon\Filters\Extension\.pdf) contains this value:

· Name: Default

Type: REG_MULTI_SZ

Data: {E8978DA6-047F-4E3D-9C78-CDBE46041603}

** NOTE if the GUID isn’t set to this value then change it**

** I had to change mine from 4C904448-74A9-11D0-AF6E-00C04FD8DC02 **

** Look in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E8978DA6-047F-4E3D-9C78-CDBE46041603} and you’ll see the PDF iFilter dlls**

· Ensure this registry subkey (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\Search\Setup\Filters\.pdf) contains these values:

· Name: Default

Type: REG_SZ

Data: (value not set)

· Name: Extension

Type: REG_SZ

Data: pdf

· Name: FileTypeBucket

Type: REG_DWORD

Data: 0x00000001 (1)

· Name: MimeTypes

Type: REG_SZ

Data: application/pdf

· Restart Windows.

· Ensure a full crawl starts.

· stsadm -o spsearch -action fullcrawlstart

· Wait a few minutes until the crawl completes and test a search for text within your PDF.
